Guests staying at hotels in Swindon on the weekend of 1st – 2nd March were in for a welcoming surprise, with the first ever instalment of The Brunel Vintage and Retro Festival taking place.
A new approach for the city centre, the festival was all about celebrating the fashions and times of years gone by, as retro continues to be popular. With many people calling for the festival to come back next year too, finding a Swindon hotel at this time of year may become a little harder.
The festival was the idea of Carry on Vintage, a retrograde retailer which, with the help of The Brunel Shopping Centre management, wanted to deliver something new.
According to marketing assistant Rochelle Knowles from the centre, it worked too. Knowles said:
“From the feedback we have had, people have said it’s refreshing, it’s what Swindon needs.
“It’s something completely different to bring to Swindon. If this is a successful weekend it’s definitely looking like an event for next year.”
The co-owner of Carry on Vintage was certain the event should be repeated, saying:
“We are absolutely delighted with what the end product has become. If it could be a yearly event it would be wonderful.”
Over the two days, the shopping centre put on a number of fashion shows, whilst there were also shows at Wharf Green. Vintage car and bike displays were also on hand across the town centre, whilst the marquee at Wharf Green had a number of traders selling all manner of bric-a-brac and collectables.
