Hotel History

historic swindon hotel

BEST WESTERN PLUS Blunsdon House Hotel originated soon after the Bath and West Agricultural Show was held at Swindon in late 1957, when farmers Peter & Zan Clifford took in bed & breakfast customers to help out a friend.  The guest house became a licensed country club in 1960, and then a fully licensed hotel in 1962. We have climbed through hotel ratings of listed, approved, one, two and three star, to become the first four star hotel in the county of Wiltshire. The Clifford family still own the hotel, Peter, Zan, son John, daughter in law Carrie are the directors and third generation Ben, Christopher & Grace all contribute to the business.

We have progressed by endeavoring to give value for money, and by keeping customer orientated, from our valued local village and town people, to national and international travelers. Our wish is to give satisfaction to everyone who comes through our doors. This outlook has permeated through to our staff, some of whom have been with us since we first opened.

We are a member of Best Western Hotels, a group of 4000 + individually owned and operated hotels in over 80 countries worldwide. In 2004 we became only the fourth Best Western Premier hotel in the UK, acknowledging the higher level of services and amenities we offer in stylish & charming surroundings.

Blunsdon House Hotel is probably unique as a family owned and operated four star hotel and values very highly the many personal connections built up over the years. Generations of families have been visiting for all sorts of important happenings – Romantic dinners for two, weddings, christenings, anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions, some groups have been making annual reunion visits for over 30 years.

Swindon has grown during this time and many multi-national businesses have moved to the town. As a consequence big hotel groups have also arrived but none even aspire to the same personal touch found at Best Western Premier Blunsdon House. Constant reinvestment in facilities and a management ethos that dictates that guests are treated as individual people, not a room number, is frequently commented upon by many customers that have also become friends.

Over the years Community Service Clubs have based themselves at the hotel, and in turn we have been pleased to support them and their fund raising efforts whenever possible.

The hotel responds positively whenever possible to the numerous requests received for raffle prizes from local schools and charity organisations. The hotel is often approached by local people embarking on fund raising campaigns and the Garden Room (ballroom) may be offered free of room hire charges for worthy charitable events.
